Frost & Sullivan Presents 2004 Entrepreneurial Company Award to AVST

AVST Selected for its Accomplishments and Leadership in the Enterprise Speech Solutions Market.

Foothill Ranch, Calif., May 19, 2004 - Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc. (AVST) announced today that it was presented with the Frost & Sullivan 2004 Entrepreneurial Company Award for demonstrating superior entrepreneurial ability through its accomplishments and leadership in the enterprise speech solutions market. In selecting AVST for the award, Frost & Sullivan, an international strategic market and growth consulting firm, named AVST's flagship product, CallXpress® one of the top speech-enabled unified messaging (UM) products in the North American market.

Ranked among the leading unified messaging solutions, AVST's CallXpress solution enables users to access their company's communications infrastructure, including voice mail, email, and fax messages from any voice or data device—desktop, laptop, PDA, wired phone or cell phone—either via a GUI, touch tone or speech interface. The CallXpress solution set is designed to support the growing requirement for second generation PBX independent communications applications among the business community. Case studies have shown that in-office staff can manage their messages twice as efficiently by using CallXpress instead of traditional messaging solutions. Remote and traveling employees can improve their efficiency by more than three times by using CallXpress instead of traditional messaging solutions.

According to Frost & Sullivan, the relatively untapped unified messaging market is expected to grow rapidly over the next five to six years. "One of the biggest drivers in this growing market is the development and promotion of speech-enabled unified messaging solutions that allow mobile users to access their voice, email and fax messages over the telephone anywhere, any time. As individuals become increasingly mobile, this capability is likely to become more appealing to UM users," said Elka Popova, a Frost & Sullivan analyst. "Given its existing customer and partner relationships, world-class solution set and substantial brand name recognition, AVST is well positioned to take advantage of the growing demand for these speech-enabled unified messaging solutions."

"AVST's solutions are off-the-shelf and easily installable," added Popova. "Such packaged applications will help the speech solutions market grow more rapidly as they are typically less expensive and allow customers to deploy new capabilities faster and more efficiently. The features and capabilities of CallXpress will enable AVST to differentiate from competitors and appeal to a large number of diverse customers."

AVST has already secured the support of strong channel partners, including Verizon's Enterprise Solutions Group, Altura Communication Solutions and Norstan Communications, that will enable the company to continue expanding its list of medium and large enterprise customers. The CallXpress product is also distributed worldwide on an OEM basis by Ericsson and its distribution partners under the "OneBox™" brand name. Frost & Sullivan predicts that as demand for more sophisticated enterprise communications solutions increases, AVST is likely to experience significant growth.

"We are honored to be recognized by one of the world's leading market consulting firms as a top innovator in the emerging market for speech-enabled communications solutions," said Hardy Myers, AVST's President and CEO. "This award is further validation of our focused strategy as a company to deliver the most robust communications feature set to meet the evolving requirements of today's medium and large enterprise customers." Frost & Sullivan presents awards to companies that demonstrate the diligence, perseverance, and dedication required to develop a successful business plan and excel in the increasingly competitive global marketplace.

Frost & Sullivan rigorously analyzes specific criteria to determine award recipients in a variety of regional and global market landscapes. The Frost & Sullivan 2004 Entrepreneurial Award signifies the recipient's identification of a unique and revolutionary product solution with significant market potential. Additionally, the award certifies that the company's marketing strategy is sound and poised for success.
