AVST Appoints Pat Howard to Board of Directors

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif., March 1, 2006 – Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc. (AVST), a leading provider of unified communications solutions for businesses of all sizes, today announced it has appointed Pat Howard, an industry visionary and business leader, to its Board of Directors.

With 30 years of experience in the telecom and technology markets and building and managing the distribution channels that support them, Howard brings a wealth of knowledge to the diverse group of industry experts and visionaries on AVST’s Board.  Throughout his career, Howard has focused his energies on developing profitable and uniquely valuable products, services and companies in the converged voice and data applications space.

Pat’s expertise in building and supporting solution-centric distribution channels and his significant contributions to the telecom industry through his leadership at such renowned companies as VMX and Mosaix fits perfectly with AVST’s vision of working with world class distribution partners to deliver PBX independent best-of-breed unified communications solutions for businesses of all sizes,” said AVST’s President and CEO Hardy Myers.  “We will take great advantage of his counsel and guidance as we continue to accelerate the global expansion of our business.”

Howard has served as the CEO of a variety of prestigious, publicly-traded firms in the telecom sector including VMX, one of the premier call processing and voice messaging companies in the world, where he led the company from near startup to a global leader with strong profitability and over $120 million in annual sales.  As CEO of Mosaix, a call center software and systems provider, the company doubled sales and tripled earnings-per-share during his three year tenure.  Howard most recently served as CEO of QuantumShift, where he increased the company's telecom management hosted services and reduced the company's dependence on its reseller business before selling it in 2004.  In addition to these public companies, Howard has also led various private companies including ComPath, Soundlogic, PhoneZone and Banter through early stage product and company development to profitable operations and/or highly valued liquidity events.

Howard is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Management Program and San Diego State University.  His past and current independent consulting or directorship roles include Banter (intelligent email response automation), Straight Source (recruitment process outsourcing), Circa (IP telephone development, sold to PolyCom), Séance (presence-based communications integration), LiteScape (IP applications platform) and Angel Flight (charitable aviation organization).

About AVST

The typical enterprise communications infrastructure is made up of a collection of technologies from multiple vendors, acquired over time and never intended to work together. To maximize user and business productivity, while leveraging existing IT investments, interoperability is a must.

AVST delivers the industry's most interoperable Unified Communications (UC) platform that brings best-of-breed voice, mobility and business process solutions to the enterprise. Unlike virtually every other UC vendor, AVST does not constrain customers with a single vendor lock-in approach. In fact, it's the very opposite. By connecting new and existing technologies, AVST frees organizations from the constraints of a closed, single-source UC solution, unlocking the full potential of their communications infrastructure.

With over 15 million users worldwide and three decades of innovation excellence, AVST is unifying communications®.

Headquartered in Orange County, California, AVST maintains facilities in Seattle, Washington, Victoria B.C., Canada and the United Kingdom and has remote sales offices throughout the United States.
